Scotland headed to Spain with the knowledge that securing a point would secure their place in the Euro 2024 finals next summer. However, their hopes were dashed as they endured a 2-0 defeat in Seville. Just before the halftime whistle, Liverpool's left-back, Andy Robertson, sustained an injury in a collision with Spain's goalkeeper, Unai Simon, and had to exit the field with a suspected dislocated shoulder.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke said Andy Robertson had "hurt his shoulder" against Spain, and would "go back" to Liverpool as a result.
Liverpool defender Robertson was subbed off with what appeared to be a shoulder injury during Scotland’s UEFA Euro 2024 defeat against Spain on Thursday night.
With the scores at 0-0 at the Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla in Seville, Robertson was injured when Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon landed on the left-sided defender.
After being assessed he was taken off, and as he left the pitch he had his shirt fashioned into an improvised sling for his right arm.
Robertson, 29, was replaced by Nathan Patterson, Everton’s 21-year-old right-back, and goals from Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sancet won the match for the home side.
Speaking after the match in Spain, Scotland boss Clarke said: "Andy has hurt his shoulder. He will go back to his club now.”
Liverpool are missing Nathan Jones and Diogo Jota through suspension after their red cards against Tottenham, while Jurgen Klopp is also without Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, and Conor Bradley with injury.
Their first game after the international break is the Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield on Saturday, October 21.
After eight Premier League games they sit fourth on 17 points as they look to regain a top-four finish in order to secure UEFA Champions League football after missing out last season.
A draw for Scotland would have been enough to ensure they qualified from Group A for Euro 2024.
However, the 2-0 defeat meant that while they remain top, their lead over Spain is three points, with the chasing team having a game in hand to play Norway on Sunday.
Looking ahead to the remaining fixtures, Clarke said: "It's 100% in our hands. We've done a lot of work to get 15 points from six games.
"If Spain doesn't lose to Norway, we'll secure our qualification on Sunday night. However, it's important to note that our qualification doesn't depend on that single result alone. It is the outcome of our hard work and the 15 points we've earned. In the event of a Norway win, we would head into November with a credible opportunity to finish at the top of the group."
